The South Bronx has burned, suffered, and fallen. We know this history, we’ve seen the pictures, and still till this day have this reputation; but we’ve risen. The Boogie Down Bronx is about the embracement and exploration of this history and what the South Bronx truly is. Bringing together young South Bronx artist, designers, and performers of this generation we want we invoke what the South Bronx has taught us and made us feel. Through the process of creating work about the South Bronx and for it we have also learned about it grim past, have accepted it, and will never forget it. Influenced by the present South Bronx and the South Bronx of the past we want to create a show that creates a true, genuine experience of Bronx culture. While at the same time exposes the influence of this culture on young Bronx creatives.
This exhibition is curated by the brand Bronx Native, whose co-founders are siblings Amaurys and Roselyn Grullon. Bronx Native is a brand that embodies what The Bronx truly is; our borough is strong, beautiful and ambitious and we intend to expose that by highlighting and embracing our home through apparel, art and media. The Bronx has been stereotyped and underrated for far too long. We are showcasing The Bronx's culture, history and people through our clothing. Through Bronx Native we are trying to help our community prosper and move forward, we use our art to express our pride as Bronx Natives. Using different mediums such as design, film and photography we help our people and put The Bronx on the map. Our goal is to make a positive impact in The BX and show everyone what our home is really about.
Bronx Native is pleased to have the support of The Bronx Beer Hall, BXNYCreative art consultancy, and Uptown Vinyl Supreme, a Bronx-based DJ collective who will get the party started Saturday April 8th, come through!
